Marlboro is the best-selling cigarette brand in the United States and among the best-selling in the world. The cigarettes are manufactured by the Philip Morris Company, based in New York City, United States. The cigarettes were first marketed in 1902, and in 1955, after a series of articles were published in Reader's Digest magazine about the dangers of smoking, which could cause lung cancer, the company began producing the cigarettes with a filter. The name Marlboro was given after Marlboro Street in London, where the factory for the production of these cigarettes was founded.
